What is Division 05 (Div 5) metals?
CSI Division 05 explained for estimators - what Div 5 covers, how misc metals fits next to structural steel, and which sections matter on a stairs-and-rails takeoff.
If you’ve sat through a bid review, you’ve heard it: “That’s Div 5.” Sometimes they mean the whole metals package. Sometimes they mean stairs and rails. Sometimes they mean “not my structural tonnage spreadsheet.” The acronym is doing a lot of work.
This page is the plain version - what Division 05 actually is, how Div 5 shows up in the shop, and what matters when you’re doing a misc metals takeoff for stairs and railings.
Division 05 is a filing cabinet, not a product
CSI MasterFormat is how commercial construction organizes specs and (often) cost codes. Division 05 is Metals.
That’s a big drawer. Inside it you get primary structural framing culture and the fabricated metal that makes the building usable - stairs, railings, ladders, grating, embeds, bollards, the welded oddballs. Same division number. Different jobs on the fab floor.
Architects and specifiers write Division 05. Estimators say Div 5. Fabricators say miss metals when they mean the stairs-and-rails-shaped slice. If you treat those three phrases as synonyms, you’ll mis-scope a bid. If you treat them as dialects pointing at related documents, you’ll survive.
Numbering evolves by MasterFormat edition. Always match the project’s year - don’t memorize a blog post and argue with the TOC.
Structural steel vs misc metals (same Div 5, different headache)
Inside Division 05, estimators mentally split the world:
Structural steel - beams, columns, braces, joists, deck that behaves like framing. Member marks. Tonnage habits. AISC culture. Tools and training exist for this.
Misc metals - usually metal stairs, guardrails, handrails, ladders, grating, floor plate, bollards, embeds, and fabrications that aren’t the primary frame. Piece-count heavy. Labor-hour hungry. Scattered across architectural and structural sheets. Priced wrong when someone forces it through a “per ton like wide-flange” habit.
We named the product after the second job on purpose. Div 5 is the formal umbrella. Misc metals takeoff is the shop work we care about first.
If someone hands you only structural estimating books for a railing package, ask for a second opinion. Div 5 ≠ “run the tonnage tool again.”
The sections that show up on a stairs-and-rails takeoff

On older sets you’ll still see legacy numbering like 05500 Metal Fabrications. Same idea, fewer spaces.
05 12 00 Structural Steel Framing (and friends) may share the division and even the bid - still a different measuring muscle. Don’t let a joist takeoff template “help” your handrail LF.
Why Div 5 matters when you’re measuring, not specifying
Takeoff is quantities off drawings - not the selling price. So why open the Div 5 specs at all?
Because the drawings show geometry. The specs decide what that geometry is.
I’ve watched people measure beautifully from A5.2 and still miss:
- Exterior runs are hot-dip galvanized; interior is primed
- Handrail is stainless; guard is painted steel
- A “typical” rail detail is superseded by a Div 5 callout to a NAAMM standard
- Ladders or grating hitchhiked into the misc package via 05 50 00 language
Finish and material don’t become fake LF on our sheet - they live in notes. If you ignore them, estimating invents them. That’s how you win a job you regret in the paint booth.
Practical habit: before you calibrate and trace, skim the Div 5 TOC and highlight stairs, railings, fabrications, finishes, and exclusions. Then hunt sheets. Craft notes for that hunt: stair and railing quantities. Formal bookshelf: industry references.
How Div 5 shows up on real sets (the scavenger hunt)
Division 05 is a spec division. The geometry still hides on:
- Architectural plans, enlarged stair plans, railing elevations
- Structural sheets for stair frames, embeds, connection notes
- Details that say “typical” and hope you believe them
- Addenda that quietly move a landing rail
There’s rarely one schedule that gift-wraps the misc package. Half the skill is knowing which sheets to open again - then writing page refs so pricing can defend the number.
Code hitchhikes too. IBC / OSHA / ADA don’t live inside MasterFormat, but they ride the same geometry you’re measuring. A Div 5 takeoff isn’t a code review. It should still be clear enough that nobody wonders which condition they bought. Pointers: references.
Div 5 language for product and bids (without LARPing as a specifier)
Useful phrases that mean something in the shop:
- “Div 5 package” - often the metals bid as packaged by the GC; confirm whether structural is split out
- “Misc metals / stairs / rails” - the cost-code English we actually use
- “Per 05 52 00” - railing spec governs finishes/standards; still measure what’s drawn - pipe rail, tube rail, cap rail language in the detail doesn’t auto-emit LF
- “Excluded from Div 5” - glass rail by glazing, cable by specialty, ornamental by someone else - write it down
Useless phrases (for takeoff): inventing section numbers from memory, quoting MasterFormat like scripture without opening the project PDF, or pretending Div 5 auto-detect exists in software. (It doesn’t - not in our v0, and not honestly in most demos either.)

- Is Div 5 the same as misc metals?
- No. Division 05 is the whole Metals division in CSI MasterFormat - structural framing, metal deck, joists, fabrications, stairs, railings, and more. - Why do people say Div 5 instead of Division 05?
- Because estimators talk in shorthand. Specifiers write Division 05. The shop says Div 5, miss metals, stairs and rails. Same documents - different dialect.
- Do I take off from the Division 05 spec or the drawings?
- Both. Drawings give geometry (LF, EA, page refs). The Div 5 specs give inclusions, exclusions, finishes, standards cited, and sometimes measurement/payment language. Measuring only from A-sheets while ignoring 05 52 00 finishes is how you hand estimating a beautiful, wrong package.
